DIY Candle Making for Beginners: No Fancy Equipment Needed!

DIY Candle Making for Beginners: No Fancy Equipment Needed!

If you're just getting started with candle making, you don’t need expensive equipment or specialty items. You can easily create your own candles at home using items you likely already have. In this post, we’ll guide you through the process of making a candle by reusing an old one and adding a few unique touches like flowers, crystals, and custom colors!

What You’ll Need:

  • An old candle (to melt down)
  • A glass jar or small container for the new candle
  • Dried flowers or small crystals for decoration
  • A crayon (for color)
  • Diffuser oils or essential oils (for scent)
  • A stove or microwave (for melting)
  • A double boiler (or a makeshift one using a heat-safe bowl and a pot)
  • A spoon or stick for stirring

Step 1: Preparing Your Materials

Start by selecting an old candle that you want to melt down. This could be a candle that’s almost burned out, but still has some wax left. If it already has a wick, you can reuse that as well!

Step 2: Melting the Wax

Place the old candle wax into your makeshift double boiler (or heat-safe bowl over a pot of boiling water). Slowly melt the wax on low heat. Be sure to keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn.

If you don’t have a double boiler, you can also melt the wax in the microwave in short bursts of 20 seconds, stirring in between.

Step 3: Adding Color

Once your wax has fully melted, it’s time to add some color! Break off a small piece of crayon in your desired shade and drop it into the melted wax. Stir until the crayon has fully dissolved into the wax, creating a vibrant color.

Step 4: Adding Scent

If you don’t have essential oils on hand, no problem! You can use diffuser oils to add a lovely scent to your candle. Add about 10-15 drops of your favorite diffuser oil and stir it into the melted wax.

Step 5: Decorating Your Candle

Before pouring the wax into your container, you can sprinkle dried flowers or small crystals at the bottom of the jar for a beautiful decorative effect. You can also arrange some along the sides for a more artistic touch.

Step 6: Pouring the Wax

Carefully pour the melted wax into your chosen container. Be sure to keep your old wick (if it’s reusable) or a new wick standing upright in the center. You can use a clothespin or a pencil to hold the wick in place while the wax sets.

Step 7: Letting It Set

Allow the candle to cool and set for several hours or overnight. Once it's fully hardened, trim the wick to about half an inch in length, and your candle is ready to use!

Tips for Customizing Your DIY Candle

  • Experiment with different crayon colors for a range of shades and moods.
  • Combine diffuser oils for unique scent blends.
  • Try layering the wax in different colors for a striped effect.
  • Use silicone molds if you want to create fun shapes.
